Tips and troubleshooting
-
All grid layouts (column widths, order, sorts, filters, groups, and frozen columns) are remembered between sessions. If a grid ever looks wrong, click Reset Grid in the right toolbar to restore the defaults.
-
Use the Issue Summary banner as your checklist. Fixing the items it surfaces (outdated STIGs, missing host information, unauthorized Severity Overrides, missing STIG Library entries) is the fastest way to improve the quality of your checklists.
-
If you regularly work with the same set of files, turn on Load most recently used checklists when application opens at the top of the inventory tab.
-
If working multiple projects, store each projects files in their own folder, and use the Load Folder and Load Folder from history options to make switching easier.
-
For wide monitors, switch the Checklist view into 3-Column layout using the segmented control at the top of the page. The read-only requirement text gets its own column, leaving more room for your finding details.
-
The Update button in the items toolbar is the fastest way to roll the same change across many findings — and the Find and Replace tab inside Update is good for normalizing language across a checklist.
-
Use the Combine and Split actions to keep your checklist files organized: combine all the checklists for one host into a single file, or split a multi-STIG checklist back into separate files.
Common messages and what they mean
Section titled “Common messages and what they mean”-
“STIG Library Empty / Load STIGs into the STIG Library before adding one to a checklist.” Open the STIG Library page and add at least one STIG before using Add STIG.
-
“‘<filename>’ could not be found and has been removed from the list.” A checklist file in your inventory was deleted or moved on disk. The row was removed automatically.
-
“Severity Override is not allowed per Business Rules.” The checklist has one or more items using Severity Override, but your Business Rules don’t permit them. Either remove the overrides or relax the rule on the Business Rules page.
-
“Successfully loaded N POA&M records from <filename>.” Your POA&M was loaded. From now on, the In eMASS POA&M? column in each checklist will show whether each finding has a matching record.
-
“⚠ Save failed.” STIGreviewer could not write your latest change. Check that the file is not read-only and not open in another application.
When things look wrong

If columns are missing or out of order, click Reset Grid in the right toolbar of that grid to restore the default layout.
-
If you cannot see any data on a page after loading a file, check whether you have any column filters or a search term active. The active filter is always shown above the grid.
